I love that series - read it all and only liked one book less (don't remember which one though). It took me some time to get into this world, but once I did, I got hooked !
It's clear that the story is really spread out over the different books, so indeed it takes a while to really get into it :)
This series is quite loved, I have book one and hope to start them after the Hollows end. Glad to see the protagonist is tested.
