Review: Word Play by Amalie Silver

Smut sells.

Michael Rourke learned this the hard way.

Struggling to make ends meet as a mystery writer, he sold his soul - and his pride - as he pedaled sex and lust writing under the pen name Christoph Strong.

No one knew he was the one behind the steamy stories on the bestsellers lists. And he planned to keep it that way.

Until he met her.

Monica Singer, an infamous blogger, is keen to discover the truth of his secret identity.

During a chance meeting at a book convention, Michael and Monica form an instant connection. And soon, an industry rivalry becomes something else entirely.

But as Michael starts to let his guard down, he doesn’t realize that the person he's learning to trust may be hiding secrets of her own.

Secrets that could ultimately destroy everything.

Michael Roarke's career as a mystery writer wasn't going as well as he hoped. In order to be able to pay his bills he wrote an erotica novel under the name Christian Strong. It looks like that went way better than expected, since he's now a bestseller. Though honestly, he feels a bit ashamed for writing smut, but as long as nobody knows who he really is, he doesn't care.

That is about to change though. On his way to a book signing someone discovers his pictures and links it with Christian Strong. The mayhem that follow, well nobody expected that. Suddenly he needs security and women are throwing their panties at him. He's become the Justin Timberlake of the book world. Michael really doesn't like it. At first he goes along with it, but it's just not his thing.

When he meets Monica he lets his fake facade fall and makes a real connection. Though things are not quite what they seem with her. That's about all I can say about the plot. This one is definitely way more fun to discover yourself.

The story is told from a dual point of view, so while the characters are trying to figure out what's going on, you get to be all knowing. Michael and Monica are great characters. The idea of a man writing erotica was very refreshing. I know there are very little men who do that and I can imagine a lot of women would go extreme fangirl on such a guy, certainly if he's good looking.

The whole setup of this story was actually very refreshing and unique. There was plenty of humor and interesting twists. All the characters were very likeable and I was jealous of Monica in the more steamy scenes. This is one of those books I enjoyed way more than expected. I really liked how it involved authors and book bloggers. There were these little blog snippets that were hilarious and so recognizable. Amalie Silver has done an amazing job with this story and I'll definitely be reading more from her.
