Review: The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller

The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller came out last week and is her debut novel, so that is always very exciting. Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing I received a copy for review, which as always is completely honest and a reflection of my personal opinion.
On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.

Review:
First of all the title isn't really accurate, because Maddie has always been a nerd, it's only know she has decided to come out of the closet with it. Or rather she is forced to accept who she really is if she doesn't want to lose the cute guy.
"What if the girls on the squad realize I swoon over Peter Parker or that I secretly wish our uniforms included a cape?"
Ever since middle school Maddie Summer has realized life is easier if you're not a geek and go for mainstream. Having kept up appearance all these years and hiding away her giant comic book collections on her e-reader, the truth is finally coming out when Logan, at the local comic shop, recognizes her.
"I have been treating this like Las Vegas: what happens in the summer, stays in the summer."
Now secretly Maddie always had a bit of a crush on the guy, but she thought being seen with him would mean social suicide. But now that it's Summer she might get a chance to explore her geeky side more; hours pouring over all types of comics, even participating in a live-action role-playing... this guy really makes her happy. The question of course is if Maddie is willing to embrace her inner nerd or will she remain in her safe haven of popularity?

It really was such a fun read. You immediately like Maddie, she's such a typical seventeen-year-old, so concerned with her reputation etc. It's that typical teenage behavior that made it into a delightful read. Maddie sees her world a bit like the comics she read, everything is in epic proportions; the slightest "bad" thing happens and it's the end of the world and nobody will like her and they will all hate her...
"That's what matter. You can't spend your life being afraid of what other people think."
The story is really about learning to accept yourself for who you really are, because that's when you'll be the happiest and people will love you no matter what. So a bit cliché and idealistic, but none the less an awesome book!!!

We know Maddie loves comic books, but what is your geeky pleasure?
