Book Review: Caged Warrior (Dragon Kings #1) by Lindsey Piper

Next week Caged Warrior will revealed and I received an ARC copy through edelweiss thanks to Simon & Schuster and of course Lindsey Piper, for writing an honest and unbiased review. Caged Warrior, the first book in the Dragon Kings series, will be released on June 25. The second book, Blood Warrior, will be available on July 30. Silent Warrior is a prequel to these books and can easily be read separately.
The first installment in this fierce and sensual new paranormal romance series features demonic gladiators, ruthless mafia villains, and a proud race on the brink of extinction.

Ten years ago, Audrey MacLaren chose to marry her human lover, making her an exile from the Dragon Kings, an ancient race of demons once worshiped as earthly gods. Audrey and her husband managed to conceive, and their son is the first natural-born Dragon King in a generation—which makes him irresistible to the sadistic scientist whose mafia-funded technology allows demon procreation. In the year since her husband was murdered, Audrey and her little boy have endured hideous experiments.

Shackled with a collar and bound for life, Leto Garnis is a Cage warrior. Only through combat can Dragon Kings earn the privilege of conceiving children. Leto uses his superhuman speed and reflexes to secure the right for his two sisters to start families. After torture reveals Audrey’s astonishing pyrokenesis, she is sent to fight in the Cages. If she survives a year, she will be reunited with her son. Leto is charged with her training. Initially, he has no sympathy for her plight. But if natural conception is possible, what has he been fighting for? As enemies, sparring partners, lovers, and eventual allies, Leto and Audrey learn that in a violent underground world, love is the only prize worth winning.

Review:
Dragon Kings are not your traditional fire breathing animals, they don't even change form, but they do have certain powers and healing skills. Each clan has a certain specialty, but Audrey (human name)/Nynn (dragon name) never had any powers until now.

Because of the horrible things they did to her in the lab, her powers manifested and she is send in the Cages. She has to fight if she wants her son to stay alive. Now Audrey has to leave everything behind if she wants to survive and hopefully escape.
"His jaw was fixed in an expression she'd learned to recognize: You will find no mercy here."
Thus enters Leto. From a very young age he was shaped into the warrior he is now. He fights to protect his family and so that they may reproduce. In the beginning I absolutely didn't like Leto. He's way too crude, sinister, borderline evil and cruel, all in the name of trying to break Audrey, so she can become a great fighter. I don't approve of his methods and the way he thinks has me convinced he's kind of brainwashed. Placing it in the story, I do understand where he comes from and why he has to do those things to her. Of course he grows during the story, certainly in his behavior towards Audrey, starts realizing some things about his bosses etc. but still I'm not totally convinced of the man. His personality is maybe a little too hard for my taste.
"Break her. What a lie. She'd taken everything thrown her way and absorbed it."
The things they did to Audrey in the lab are sickening. I was so glad Lindsey Piper didn't went too far in detail with that or I would have just skipped those passages. There are some things I can't read or see, things that are unforgivable. Still Audrey, having been through all that does not give up. That woman just keeps on fighting no matter what you throw at her. The love for her son and the hate for the Aster family motivates her to make it out alive.
"Yet he was sexy in the basest, most primitive sense. Weapons and armor and strength."
If she wants to escape or even just survive the Cage, she will need the help of Leto. Audrey hates him and what he represents, but she needs him and strangely she has this attraction towards him, but fights it because that feels like betrayal of her love for her (ex-)husband and the life she had before. In due time she this all sinks in and the hatred she has for him very slowly turns in something quite else.

Caged Warrior has a lot of action, mental gore, but also complexity and depth you don't always expect. The main focus is on Leto and Audrey, two very well rounded characters, each with real flaws, hurts, hopes and dreams. The dynamic between these two is simply amazing. Also Audrey is such a strong character, being gone through all that and never giving up is very admirable. Other than that there are some political choices made, which will probably affect the next books. Some side characters that will make your skin crawl, you can not help but hate them, they are that evil.
"I've seen the snow and the sun now, but without you, I'll live in the dark forever."
I am crazy about this book. Blood Warrior is on my TBR list and I hope it can keep up with Caged Warrior. As always I'm really curious how the two stories will connect. I can say nothing more, but you just have to read it!!!

Book Review: Carrier of the Mark (Carrier #1) by Leigh Fallon

Their love was meant to be.

When Megan Rosenberg moves to Ireland, everything in her life seems to fall into place. After growing up in America, she's surprised to find herself feeling at home in her new school. She connects with a group of friends, and she is instantly drawn to darkly handsome Adam DeRÍs.

But Megan is about to discover that her feelings for Adam are tied to a fate that was sealed long ago—and that the passion and power that brought them together could be their ultimate destruction.

Review:
The story starts when Megan and her Dad once again move, but this time it's from Detroit to another continent. As they settle down in Ireland, Megan for the first time in a long while feels a certain calm, like this could finally be their new home, no more moving.
"He oozed arrogance, from his perfect straight nose to his carefully disheveled hair. Not my type at all."
As school starts she quickly makes friends with Caitlin, a nice girl, whose mom own the town's bed and breakfast. Her first day of school is also the first day she sees Adam Deris. She's sure he's not her type and everyone warns her away from him, still she feels a pull towards him. It also seems he feels the same as she often caught him staring at her. Still Adam keeps his distance, so Megan doesn't dare to explore any further.

Ever since the Deris' moved to town a couple of years ago, rumors have been going around about strange events happening, even witchcraft. After Megan sees some thing that might fall under weird, she wonders if there may be truth behind those rumors.
"I've been watching you ... stalker style, even when I couldn't see you."
So maybe Adam might not be so unaffected by his connection towards Megan as he made it seem. When Adam makes some confessions, it's way more than Megan would ever expect. Suddenly she's thrown into the world of Carriers. When Leigh Fallon explains all that Carrier stuff it's complicated and you have to pay attention if you want to fully understand it, because it's pretty much a lesson in biology in combination with history.

Without giving away any spoilers, as is usual there are also some bad guys who come after them, there are complications for the blooming romance between the two main characters (no third party involved) and Megan has to come to terms with everything that is going on and all those changes.

As often with the first book of a trilogy, it's an introduction in this case into the world of the Carriers and there is still a lot of room for it to grow. Carrier of the Mark already had some action in it, those first steps of romance and I'm sure that in the second book these will develop even further and make it even more interesting.

Excerpt + Review: When Summer Comes (Whiskey Creek #3) by Brenda Novak

Excerpt

Panic turned Callie’s knees to water as she felt the raw power of Levi’s quick, sure movements. She opened her mouth to scream but couldn’t draw in enough air.

For the first time, she was afraid of him. Really afraid. In that moment, she knew without a doubt that he could do anything he wanted to her, and that, despite her diagnosis, she still cared.

The fear didn’t last, however. As soon as he realized it was her, he eased his hold enough to turn her in his arms. “I’m sorry,” he murmured. “I hope...I hope I didn’t hurt you. I didn’t know...”

His words fell off, but she understood. He hadn’t known it was her. She should’ve announced herself. She would have, except that she’d been waiting to get close enough to touch his arm, in case he was sleeping. “It’s okay,” she said. “I...I shouldn’t have surprised you.”

“What are you doing out here?”

He released her but she couldn’t let go of him. She was still trying to overcome the effects of receiving such a fright, worried that she might crumble to the ground. “I-I wanted to see if you’d come inside.”

“Why?”

His deep voice rumbled in her ear, but he must have felt her shaking because his hands no longer hung at his sides. They were sliding up her back. She could feel the warmth his splayed fingers provided as he drew her into a solid embrace that reassured her but did nothing to slow her galloping heart.

Instinctively, she turned her cheek against the soft cotton of his T-shirt. Don’t read anything into this. He’s just being kind. Such contact was normal, given her reaction. But she couldn’t deny that the chemistry between them had suddenly changed. She liked the feel of his firm chest, the security she felt in the circle of his arms, but there was also a sexual element—probably because he wasn’t completely dressed. She’d already felt the band of his briefs, the crisp hair on his legs as he brushed up against her.

She swallowed hard as his hands settled between her shoulder blades. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“Why not?”

“I was...I was worried that maybe Denny and his fool of a friend would come back and cause trouble.” “They might. But they’re the kind of trouble I can handle.”

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*
One day, Callie Vanetta receives devastating news . . .
She needs a liver transplant. But her doctors warn that, in her case, the chances of finding a compatible donor aren’t good. Determined to spend whatever time she has left on her own terms, she keeps the diagnosis to herself and moves out to her late grandparents’ farm. She’s always wanted to live there. But the farm hasn’t been worked in years and she begins to fear it’s too much, she’ll have to return to town.

One night, a stranger comes knocking at her door…
He’s an attractive and mysterious drifter by the name of Levi McCloud who offers to trade work for a few nights’ shelter. Callie figures she doesn’t have anything to lose. He needs a place to stay until he can fix his motorcycle; she needs an extra pair of hands. The arrangement seems ideal until what was supposed to be temporary starts to look more and more permanent. Then she realizes she does have something to lose — her heart. And, although he doesn’t yet know it, Levi stands to lose even more.
Review:
When Summer Comes is the third book in the Whiskey Creek series and they can easily be read separately, but it's more fun if you read them all. It gives you more background on the characters, which in Callie's case did make a difference.

Callie a new liver if she wants to stay alive. Faced with this horrible fate, she starts keeping everything to herself. She doesn't tell anybody about her diagnosis and moves into her grandparents farm saying she's going to fix it up. This is partially true, but it also keeps her away from her friends and family's prying eyes.

I got to know Callie a bit in the previous books and she was this very strong, confident woman. Now that confidence is kind of wavering. Knowing she might die, she starts pushing everyone away, not wanting them to have pity on her. This of course doesn't stop them from wondering what is going on, definitely when a certain man arrives on the scene.

After Callie mistakes Levi for a robber, they clear the air and call truce. He needs a place to stay and she needs a helping hand around the farm. Levi has been a drifter for a while now and just like Callie he has secrets he isn't willing to share (yet). Like whenever the police shows up, he disappears, which has everyone concerned most of Callie.

Now Levi is a very attractive man and Callie is a beautiful woman, so thinking she might have not that long to live, she goes for it. What indeed was supposed to be a temporary arrangement, seems to take longer than expected when not only the Summer comes closer, but when Levi gets closer to her heart and finding out her secret.

When Summer Comes is part of those contemporary adult romances where you can read one after another and never get tired of reading. Strong main characters, with obvious (sexual) tension, interesting side characters and a plot that keeps you turning page after page.

Book Review: Love Irresistibly (FBI / US Attorney #4) by Julie James

I truly love Julie James' books. She takes things to a whole other level that has me laughing, sighing and entranced.

Love Irresistibly is the fourth book in the FBI/US Attorney series and it does not disappoint at all!

HE’S USED TO GETTING WHAT HE WANTS…

A former football star and one of Chicago’s top prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cade Morgan will do anything to nail a corrupt state senator, which means he needs Brooke Parker’s help. As general counsel for a restaurant company, she can get a bug to the senator’s table at one of her five-star restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. All Cade has to do is convince Brooke to cooperate—and he’s not afraid to use a little charm, or the power of his office, to do just that.

AND WHAT HE WANTS IS HER.

A savvy businesswoman, Brooke knows she needs to play ball with the U.S. Attorney’s office—even if it means working with Cade. No doubt there’s a sizzling attraction beneath all their sarcastic quips, but Brooke is determined to keep things casual. Cade agrees—until a surprising turn of events throws his life into turmoil, and he realizes that he wants more than just a good time from the one woman with whom he could fall terrifyingly, irresistibly in love . . .
Review:

Cade needs Brooke's help in an investigation. He namely needs to bug on of her restaurants in order to catch a bad guy. In the previous books the investigation was a huge part of the story, usually this meant that the two main characters were forced to work together for a long time. This time that was not the case. The investigation was only the beginning, it's their undeniable attraction that makes them come together again and again.

It's new revelations and opportunities that might get in the way of a happy ending. Not to mention Cade's apparently emotionally unavailable and Brooke's not the "big picture kind of girl".
"She gave one hundred and ten percent to whatever is was she was doing, and basically had one speed when it came to her career: full speed."
Brooke indeed goes all out for her career as it sort of has come to define her. She's a woman with character, competitive, accepts no help, wants to make it on her own and just realized she might have to make some sacrifices for that (love). It's not that she doesn't want love, it's just isn't so simple to do her job the way she does it and still have all the rest. At least that's what she thinks.
"I think by definition, one actually has to have a father in order to have father issues."
Cade is very driven. When he had to give up football, he put his focus on being a lawyer and completely went for it. He isn't afraid to take on profile cases, he even prefers them (see Twitter terrorist). The guy doesn't know the word giving up, not just when it comes to work, but also in every other aspect of his life. He does obviously have daddy issues and they play a big part in the story. He continually has that urge to prove himself.
"In every hot, hope-the-neighbors-didn't-hear-but-damn-that-was-some-great-sex sense of the word."
As always Julie James delivers. We've got depth and complexity, well rounded characters with a great sense of humor that even makes ma laugh out loud while reading. Sex scenes where the steam just rises out of the pages. The main characters are bot very strong willed, determined and hardheaded, creating sparks that nearly make you burn with excitement.

Julie James is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. When you read her books you really notice the difference between the adult and new adult genre. While new adult is fun and a lot of drama combined, Julie James' writing takes it up a notch, more subtle humor and all around better developed and written.

I can not recommend her books often enough. So start reading!!!
