Heart Awareness Month & Review: Even The Moon Has Scars by Steph Campbell

Steph's youngest daughter was born with a rare heart defect called TAPVR. Britta is a happy, healthy three year old now, and also the inspiration for EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS. In honor of Heart Awareness Month, Steph will be running a sale on EVEN THE MOON HAS SCARS from Feb 16-23. We would love for you to join us in spreading the word! #1in100

Two strangers.
Two broken hearts.
One night to set each other free.

Almost dying from an undiagnosed heart condition means every second of your life is a precious gift to be guarded.
Lena Pettitt was born a miracle.
And her parents never let her forget it.
Even if that daily reminder kept her from experiencing the one thing they were trying to protect most--her life.

Gabriel Martinez’s heart has been ripped out.
His pride has been stomped on.
Oh, and he now has an arrest record that’s caused an even bigger rift between him and his DA mother. All for a love that wasn’t really true.

Now he’s exiled to his grandmother’s, working on his late grandpa’s old Corvair, when a shivering girl knocks on the garage door. Lena, left alone for the first time ever, has locked herself out of her house. Gabe knows he could help this girl get back inside her house--but that may mean missing the next train to Boston to pick up the part he’s spent eight weeks tracking down. She can wait for him at his grandmother’s or…

A few hours, an aluminum valve cover, and some strong coffee later, neither Gabe nor Lena can feign disappointment when they race to the station and arrive just as the last train home from Boston is pulling out.

As jaded as he is, Gabe can’t deny the fact that he’s excited to spend the night exploring a city he knows nearly every corner of, with a girl who sees magic in the simplest things.
Lena has been waiting for her tiny world to crack open her entire life. Now that it’s finally happened, she finds the only thing she can focus on is the unexpected tour guide who opens her eyes to possibilities she never imagined.

All they have is this one night, together, under the bright moon in a city full of hidden beauty.
It’s one night that will change how they see the world and the paths their hearts will take forever.

I don't want to rehash too much about the plot as it is very well explained in the synopsis. It's been a while since I've read a true young adult romance novel and I liked this one a lot. Lena accidentally ends up in what is the biggest adventure of her life so far, with a boy she's only just met. Now don't expect some unbelievable crazy things to happen, but rather a discovery of the city alongside some minimal drama. Which only points out how sheltered her life has been so far, quite the opposite of Gave. He's a bit more impulsive than her, without any nefast intentions though. While he wasn't looking forward to helping Lena out, in the end he's very glad she came knocking on his door.

A very simple and pretty short story that I've truly enjoyed. Two different types of main characters, each with an interesting background. I don't want to say that things stay superficial, though rather that it all has this sweet taste to it, that keeps the story pretty light and heartwarming. Also I have to mention how gorgeous that cover is!

Interview & Giveaway: Golden Hour (Crescent City #1) by Steph Campbell & Liz Reinhardt

Perfect NOLA date (Caleb’s pov)

Caleb: The perfect date, huh? I guess I’m more a Mid City guy myself. Not many tourists, and a nice mix of every walk of life. I’m pretty blue collar all around, but I have unexpected polish here and there. Now, this is a deep secret I may deny up and down later, but I wasn’t always cruising with good looking girls, looking for cheap beer back in high school. I spent a fair amount of time walking City Park and poking around the NOMA.

Elise butts in: Wait a second. Are you actually trying to convince us that you, the infamous Caleb Warren, spent your deviant youth wandering around the New Orleans Museum of Art?

Caleb: Don’t look so shocked, doll. I’ve been known to get downright moony over a nice Jack Delano photograph. I’d love to take you sometime. When we're done looking at all the respectable New Orleans photographs, there’s a few risque ones. Like a nude photo of a woman with skin that looks like velvet. Makes me think of you.

Elise: Caleb!

Caleb: Sorry, baby, but you know I have some wild Cajun blood running through my veins. Brassaï took pictures of the kind of women I like…sexy and sweet, just like you.

Elise’s whispered aside: Caleb Warren, we can continue this conversation later…in bed!

Elise: So it would really be all high art on your ideal date?

Caleb: Hell no. A nice walk through St. Louis Cemetery # 3, preferably when the sun is setting and the the girl you love is just a tiny bit spooked--

Elise: Ha! Nice try, Warren. I’m born and raised in this city…ghosts don’t bother me even a tiny bit.

Caleb: Couldn’t you pretend? Just to be sweet?

Elise: Sorry, babe. I’m not the shrinking violet type. So you’re ideal date is shocking photography and hauntings?

Caleb: I’d round it out with a gelato from Brocato’s, and then we could pick up an ice cold six pack, find a quiet old live oak to sit under, and drink until the stars came out.

Elise: That actually sounds pretty romantic.

Caleb: Glad you’re all in. The Canal Streetcar is leaving in a few, and I’m ready to experience it all with you. And when we’re done, I’d love to strip you down and have my way--

Elise in a whisper: Caleb, enough! For now, anyway…

In the medical field, the precious moments following a traumatic event in which you have the best chance of saving a life are known as the golden hour.

But being there during the golden hour doesn't mean you'll be able to save the one you love...

New Orleans native and ER nurse, Elise Dupuis knows that fact all too well. There was nothing she could do to save her fiancé, New Orleans police officer Mike Bazanac, when he was brought into her hospital with two fatal bullet wounds.

Now everyone walks around on eggshells when she comes into the room—except her brother Charlie. As Mike's partner, he bears a guilt that's spiraled him into dark pain. Charlie is lashing out, Elise is turning in, and life seems to be falling apart around them.

Caleb Warren knows what it feels like to always be on the losing end of things. A few criminal turns in his youth landed him two crap choices: mandatory service in the armed forces or jail. He chooses to enlist, and just when he finds a commander who has a little faith in him, their truck hits an IED. Caleb's training as a medic isn't enough to save the one person who's ever given a damn about him.

Now back in New Orleans as an EMT, Caleb is bound and determined to drown himself in booze and regrets. But he crosses paths with nurse Elise Dupuis and finds a woman whose passion and courage gets under his skin in a way that wakes him up and makes him want to live again.

Unfortunately, Charlie doesn't think the new EMT is good enough for his sister, and he’ll step outside the lines of the law to prove it to Elise.

Caleb has to figure out what's worth fighting for…and how far he's willing to go for the woman he loves.

The Authors
Liz grew up on the East Coast, and Steph on the West Coast-and somehow they both ended up making their homes with their husbands and children in small, Southern towns. They've been co-writing since 2012 after they each read a book written by the other and contacted each other to gush.

Liz loves Raisinettes, even if they aren't really candy, the Oxford comma, movies that are hilarious or feature Zombies, any and all books, but especially romance (the smarter and hotter, the better), the sound of her daughter's incessantly wise and entertaining chatter, and watching her husband work on cars in the driveway.

Steph has one husband, four children, and a serious nail polish obsession. When she isn't reading, writing or wiping someone's nose, you can usually find her baking something.

Review: Limits (Lengths #3) by Steph Campbell & Liz Reinhardt

Genevieve Rodriguez is less than thrilled when her older brother’s best friend, Deo, runs off and marries Whit, the girl who doesn't even deserve him. At least that’s what Gen believes. And so what if everyone thinks it’s just a stupid crush? She’s had a thing for Deo for as far back as she can remember.

Freshly heartbroken and downright annoyed, Genevieve is also one ‘D’ away from getting kicked out of school. In other words, life could be better for the rowdy, youngest Rodriquez sibling. Her only hope of passing physics is her quiet, nerdy tutor, Adam.

Adam isn't her type at all. He’s too quiet, too polite, and he’d rather stare at lab charts than bother to notice the bustier top so sexy, it turned the head of every guy in a five-mile radius.
When Adam tells Genevieve that he won’t be back after winter break because his visa is about to expire, the words drop out of her spontaneous, heartbroken mouth before she has the time to think...

“Marry me.”

Thinking it’s a joke, Adam gives Genevieve a firm no. But when the joke turns into something more, all bets are off and all limits are broken. Adam may not notice a perfect bustier, but he can’t resist a good argument. And Genevieve has been arguing to get exactly what she wants her entire life.

REVIEW

The way these two authors are able to create a story together is simply wonderful. Each time they write a heartfelt story, that will make you think, with realistic characters while still keeping it sweet.

I think I might have a soft spot for Adam. He is just so geeky and sweet, while also being sexy and strong. Adam knows what he wants in life and isn't afraid to go after it. It might not always be easy and he might not always make the right choices, but he's no quitter. Also I love it how Adam pushes Gen to be the best version of herself, the believe he has in her.

Genevieve is exactly as I remember her. She is smarter than she pretends to be, sexy and has the biggest heart of them all. When Deo got married, she was faced with the reality that her dream crush will never happen. And with all the other happy couples around her, Gen finds herself on a crossroad, needing to decide which direction she wants to take her life.

The plot was definitely original and not your standard romance. These two characters are almost total opposites, though they work so well together. First there is this friendship between Gen and Adam, before it turns into something more physical. They actually did the whole marriage thing kind of in reverse.

Overall the writing was once again superb. Limits was an enjoyable and delightful story. The way these characters are written, it feels almost like if you reach out you can touch them. They are amazing and I adored Gen and Adam. The romance and emotion here were also very well formulated and believable.

Book Review: Depths (Lengths #2) by Steph Campbell & Liz Reinhardt

Do you believe in love at first phone call?

Cohen Rodriquez, Deo’s hilarious, über responsible best friend in LENGTHS got dumped by his longtime girl because he’s ‘not impulsive enough,’ and he's burned up.

But maybe, just maybe, she’s more right than he wants to admit. So he starts to date.
A lot.
But no one really feels like the one. And the more girls he dates, the more Cohen’s convinced she isn’t really out there.

Luckily he has Maren—the girl with the sexy voice who always cracks the best jokes. They’ve been talking daily for a year…on the phone. What started as all work soon blooms into friendship. Then she asks him.

Do you want to meet?

He's scared out of his mind to ruin the one easy, fun relationship he has going for him. But he takes the plunge, and things are just fine, totally easy and comfortable.

Except that they both sense it's not strictly platonic...there is an undeniable attraction and absolute raw chemistry between them…and every time they're in the same room, that attraction gets deeper and harder to ignore.

Maren could be the best thing that’s ever happened to Cohen… Or she could send his carefully compartmentalized life into a tailspin.

Cohen has to decide if he’s ready to let go of his comfortable fantasy and embrace the one girl who might be able to change his luck in love.

Review:

"How much more excitement do you need out of life that a half-Jewish, half-Mexican household."

Cohen Rodriquez just got dumped by his longtime girlfriend, because he's not exciting enough, because he never wants to try new things. So she's moving to L.A. to start her acting career and he's left working at his family's furniture store. Not that he doesn't mind that, but it was never what he expected to do for the rest of his life.

Now that he's single, he's ready to mingle. Which he might have had to think through a bit more, because the only thing that happens are some of the worst dates you've ever come across. How Steph and Liz came up with this I have no clue, but they are brilliantly bad.

"Her voice is a little too raspy - a little too sexy to have me totally convinced that she's all good."

Lately the only upside in his life are his telephone conversation with Maren, the girl who works in their warehouse site. They've never met, but they talk daily and not just about stock orders. Sharing their woes about work, but also about their love life, they have formed this connection. At least that's what he hopes, but for all he knows she might be some ugly toad, instead of the pin-up vibe he imagines in his head.

I love those stories where people have been having conversations, but never met so they can dream about the other person being sexy as hell.  Of course in real life Steven, the guy who calls me about my payment plan, is probably as unsexy as a guy can be. (Screw you reality!)

"And it hits me. Maren is going to ask me out."

So finally they meet, but not in the way you would expect. They indeed try to keep things platonic, just friends, but resisting the attraction is killing them. Things get even more complicated when they realize not everything is as it seems and they've been keeping things from each other. Cohen is a nice, respectable and reliable guy, which means he has this whole knight in shining armor thing going on, but not every girl needs a knight.

There's definitely enough (sexual) tension going on, some family drama on both sides and smoking but realistic sex scenes. Two people who realize they don't always have to do things on their own, they can confide in others. It's mostly about putting your fears aside and daring to live life to the fullest.

Book Review: Lengths (Lengths #1) by Steph Campbell & Liz Reinhardt

Nineteen-year-old Whit Conrad leaves her conservative Pennsylvania home for sunny California, looking for independence, a fresh start, and a place to stash her grief. She promptly finds a job at a tattoo parlor, a craptastic first apartment, and one friend—Ryan—who is a little less friend, a little more benefits.

Deo Beckett is a soulful surfer with a passion for tattoos and beautiful women. On the eve of his twenty-second birthday, he finds himself living with his grandfather, recently unemployed, and seriously adrift. He doesn’t know much about what he wants out of life, but he does know his current situation isn't cutting it.

When Deo meets Whit, she’s all sexy makeup and fierce, smart-ass fun. It doesn’t take him long to see past her tough shell. And when he gets a good look at what's under all the superficial stuff that usually gets his attention, it leaves Deo wondering if there might be more to life than living fast and free.

Too bad Whit has a past she doesn't plan on sharing—no matter how hot Deo is. She might want him, but she knows better than to let her guard down.

Deo falls for Whit, and falls hard. But everything about her, down to that mysterious tattoo and the way she thrashes in her sleep, tells him that the girl he loves is hiding something. And the more he pushes for answers, the more Whit pulls away.

Having your guard up is one thing, but are the lengths Whit goes to to protect her secret worth throwing away the second chance she has at happiness with Deo?

Review:

"It's the Deo effect."

When I started this book I hadn't read the synopsis, but it seemed everyone is crazy about this book, so I just go ahead and went with it. Therefore the first thing I noticed was his name, Deo, which where I come from we use that word for deodorant. So after going over that like five times in my head, I just let it go and hoped this meant he smelt really nice and fresh. Glad we got that out of the way, now on to the rest of the story.

Deo is what most people would call a beach bum. He's recently unemployed, lives with his grandfather, divides his time between surfing, drinking and beach bunnies. The only thing missing is smoking weed, but he has quit that. One of those guys who have no clue what they are going to do the rest of their lives and just cruises along. It doesn't bother him, but his family and friends do worry about it, but he just laughs it all off.

Whit is a walking contradiction. One time she looks like a freaking pin-up girl, ready for a very good time and the next minute she's scrubbed clean and don't you dare to come any closer. The girl is messed up, but it's not her fault. She moved to California to move on with her life, but what she actually has done is run away from her problems and shutting everyone out.
"That mouth and those sexy dark eyes and her perfect curves are all conspiring to drive me fucking insane."
So when these two people meet you know it's going to be intense. The physical attraction is immediate, leading is some very smoking hot scenes. Deo is not a man to waste time and he goes for it. Whit accepts this at first, but soon realizes he makes her feel too much and she pulls away. This cat and mouse game pretty much continues through the entire book. The more Deo tries to get closer to Whit, the more she pulls away, until it all blows up in their faces.

Deo is so focused on Whit and her problems, he can forget about his own worries and life. Whit hates that he tries to put his nose where it don't belong. She is all about being independent and making her own decisions, not realizing this doesn't mean you can't share your woes.

Both have to take a good look at themselves  and figure out what they want and what they are going to do, if they want to have a chance of making it in life and love.

Lengths is beautifully written. There is this great balance between strength and vulnerability within With, which makes you understand her better and easier to associate with. Then there is Deo's humor, it translates very well of the pages and always made me smile. A couple of scenes even had me tear up, because the stuff Whit has gone through are so painful. Now I definitely understand why everybody is so in love with this book. How can you not want to read a story about two people struggling with life trying to find love.
