Review: Our Little Secrets (Montana Romance #1) by Merry Farmer

Michael West swore he would never fall in love again. So when the beautiful and wily Charlotte steps off the train looking for a new life he jumps at the business opportunity she presents. Engaged forty-five minutes after meeting, married the next day, Michael thinks he’s found everything a respectable man should have. Except that Michael is as far from respectable as they come. They agreed not to ask questions about each other’s pasts, but when the past seeps into their present Michael suspects his passionate new wife is not who she says she is. Too bad he’s already fallen in love with her.

Charlotte Baldwin has a secret. She fled Philadelphia to escape the sins of her past but someone is following her. What better way to hide than by marrying Michael West, Cold Springs, Montana’s enigmatic shopkeeper? A new name, a new life, and a passionate husband is exactly what she needs to leave her sins behind. But when it comes to keeping secrets Charlotte may have met her match in Michael. When a connection neither of them expects catches up with them, the shocking revelation means Charlotte may have run right into the arms of her enemy.

No sin stays a secret forever….

Review:
Charlotte is on the run and ready to start a new life. When she arrives in Cold Springs, Montana she can't believe her luck when she immediately meets Michael. Michael is the town's shopkeeper and most of the time he's very level headed and not known for making any rash decisions. So after having known Charlotte for only a couple of hours he asks her to marry him, it would be a wedding of convenience though, not love. Charlotte sees it as a way to forget her past and accepts.

They both agree to not ask each other about the past and any possible secrets, which it seems both have plenty enough of. In the beginning everything goes perfectly alright, they are a perfect match, inside and outside the bedroom. Before they know it the feelings they swore never to encourage again, are bubbling up and might I even say love gets to play a part.

Still hiding for your past is not a great idea, sooner or later it will catch up with you. Slowly secrets get revealed and Michael and Charlotte will have to decide what and who they will believe.

I really liked how realistic everything felt about Our Little Secrets, the age difference between Charlotte and Michael (without it being creepy), the authentic feel of the town, the social standards... All this participated to get a great authentic feeling.

The two main characters are very well written. I didn't always like them, they really had their faults which made it only easier to connect with them. The secrets that get revealed throughout the story took me often by surprise. Merry Farmer kept you guessing at what was going on and who was involved.

Our Little Secrets is an enjoyable historic romantic read. Often you don't fully realise it is historic as you get caught up in the daily life and mysteries in Cold Springs. I do think that people who don't necessarily like historical stories, will like this. You get easily swept up in trying to unravel all the secrets.
