Review: Reign of the Vampires (The Society #1) by Rebekah R. Ganiere

She wants security. He wants freedom. Together their love could destroy the world.

Ten years after the outbreak of the V2000 virus turns the majority of humans into a mutated Vampire sub-species, the last remaining true humans are the world's hottest commodity. In this new world, it's The Society that rules.

Being the only female Vampire Lord in America isn't easy. Being thrust into the role of CEO is even harder. Danika Chekov refuses to let her father's legacy die. She’s resolved to keep everything under her tight control. But after she's almost killed, she’s forced to purchase a human guardian.

Mason is human, or so the Vampires think. He’s determined to protect his secret, but Lord Danika buys him before he can make his escape. Their passion for each other threatens everything they want most. And when Mason’s true nature is exposed, the results could be devastating.

It's been a while since I've read a paranormal Vampire story and well Reign Of Vampires is quite different from what I'm used to. You might even call it dystopian paranormal, as Vampires came out to humans, then humans released a virus to fight vampires, but it somehow turned them also into vampires. Therefor now original Vampires rule the world. Honestly I wasn't always following with the whole difference between vampires, vampyrs, and vamps, so I pretty much ignored all that.

Danika's situation is quite dangerous actually, as the only female vampire lord. Most times it requires her to be an ice queen and after an attempt of her life things get only worse. She needs a human protector. Though honestly I can understand that a human can protect you during daytime, but a human is no match for a vampire. So she buys one, which in this case is Mason. It's pretty clear from the beginning that he's not human though and the attraction between them is sizzling.

It did feel like there were some things you needed to overlook in this story, for not to roll your eyes at it. Once you get past those it was quite enjoyable. The chemistry between Danika and Mason was very well explored and simply hot. I also liked how depth was added by the issues of slavery, class differences and female empowerment. This definitely kept it from being a lighter read. The story is not a fast read, and I'm not sure if it was the writing or the way the plot was build, but the chances are pretty high you won't finish this in one sitting. Still I enjoyed it and if you're looking for a hot vampire story with some serious depth, go ahead and read.

3.5
