On the one hand Beth has never felt so close to Wrath, but they are each holding back some issues and it's starting to create a certain distance between them. It also made Beth realise she wants more out of life, including a child. These thoughts have been brought up before, but Wrath is having non of it.
Beth is so determined in wanting a child, she's started spending her waking hours by Layla's side, in the hopes of so going into her needing. This all without Wrath knowing of course. Wrath is still very much against the idea of bringing a child into the world. First of all, he's afraid of losing Beth, which is real probability. Second he does not want his child put in a position like he was. It's only been years since he took up real responsibilities as the king and he hates it. The endless emails, all the paperwork, the constant complaints and requests from the aristocracy. It's a life he wouldn't have chosen for himself, but was chosen for him.
It takes a while for Beth to really understand Wrath's reasoning. Still he could have handled it better. Beth though won't give up so easily. The need she has for this child is almost unexplainable. It's not just wanting a child, it really feels like a primal need to her.
So we have some marital problems going on and meanwhile the aristocrats are once again being difficult and scheming away. So Wrath's attention is being divided, forcing him to choose between the one he loves and the ones he rule. A massive amount of drama in this one.
I really liked the fact that we got to go back to the first couple, where it all started. We've seen Wrath and Beth appearing in the previous books, so you know a little of what was going on. Still it's always interesting to find out what happens after HAE. Which in turn keeps it real. Their lives aren't perfect, there isn't constant bliss, just as long as they love and put in the effort they can make it work.
There is a lot less action in this BDB than in the previous books, as the focus was was mostly on Beth and Wrath. Since the king doesn't fight anymore, the action this time comes from someone else. Assail is also back and his storyline with Marisol continues. Things really start to get intense. The same with Trez and iAm. I won't go into detail, as not to spoil anything.
I am a huge fan of the series and of the things I like the most, is the multiple story lines, some even continue through multiple books. It always leaves me wanting more. The King was once again a great read, though sometimes I did have the feeling of things getting dragged out too much between Wrath and Beth. There were many twists that didn't feel really necessary for me to the overall story line. Though it did keep you guessing at what is to come next.
Like I said, I liked the realness of the marital problems, even with the unconventional circumstances. It made it easier to connect and relate with the characters. The flow was once again perfectly executed and the story line was very engaging. It's a book the fans will definitely love.
