Saturday Series: Kaleidoscope (Colorado Mountain #6) by Kristen Ashley

When old friends become new lovers...anything can happen.

Sexy, gifted, and loyal, PI Jacob Decker is a tall, cool drink of perfection who had Emmanuelle Holmes at "hello." His relationship with Emme's best friend kept them apart for years, but things have changed. Now that a case has brought him to Gnaw Bone, Colorado, the road is wide open for Emme and Deck to explore something hotter and deeper than Emme dreamed possible. So why is she sabotaging the best thing that's ever happened to her?

It isn't easy to catch Deck off guard, but Emme does just that when she walks back into his life after nine long years. The curvy brunette had her charms back in the day, but now she's a bona fide knockout . . . and she wants to rekindle their friendship. Deck, however, wants more. Emme's always been the one; she excites Deck's body and mind like no other woman can. But a dark chapter from Emme's past overshadows their future together. Now only Deck can help her turn the page-if she'll let him . . .

It's with pain in my heart that I have to say that this series is slowly going downhill. While I freaking loved the first four book in the series, these last two just weren't up to par with the rest. We still get strong alpha Colorado Mountain men and the lovely small town feeling, but the mystery and tension is missing and the female leads are not as sassy as I'm used to by now.

I was very hopeful, because this book featured Deck and I was quite intrigued by him after reading Breathe. He had a certain air of mystery around him, almost as if he was untouchable. So the man we get to know in this books turns out to be not quite what I had in mind. Since it's pretty unclear, though dark, what he does for a living, I was expecting to go on another wild ride. Unfortunately we do not learn anything more about his work and the focus very much stays on the blooming relationship with Emme and her problems.

Now for the most part I liked Emme. There were definitely some mental issues, which was clear from the beginning, though I was surprised how deep we got into this. The thing is that the suspension and big drama happened in the past, and Emme is still dealing, or rather not dealing, with the aftermath. I'm not saying she's crazy or anything like that, but there are some unresolved issues that have effect on her general state.

Deck knows about this, because here's how they met each other. Emme was the best best friend of Deck's ex. During the relationship they got along great, but when things ended, Deck never looked back and therefor also stayed away from Emme. Now by coincidence they run into each other, and Deck kind of has an epiphany. He suddenly realized that he should have stayed in touch with her and made a play for her. So it's like he's making up for lost time and just dives in. It of course helps that Emme feels the same, though there is always a certain distance between them that they need to come over.

I still very much enjoyed reading this book, I just wasn't enamored by it. Deck did feel a bit lacking for me, simply because I expected more from him. Emme was definitely interesting, and what she's been through blew my socks off. To me the focus was just to much on her, not even the relationship between her and Deck. Since this is my first series by Kristen Ashley, I'm definitely not yet giving up on her. It seems there is a lot of difference between her self published work and her later, so I'll be going back to the beginning. I certainly still recommend the Colorado Mountain series and to give it a chance all the way to the end.

The Author
Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Saturday Series: Jagged (Colorado Mountain #5) by Kristen Ashley

An old flame rekindled . . .

Zara Cinders always knew Ham Reece was the one, but he wasn't interested in settling down. When she found someone who was, Ham walked out of her life. Three years later, Zara's lost her business, her marriage, and she's barely getting by in a tiny apartment on the wrong side of the tracks. As soon as Ham hears about Zara's plight, he's on her doorstep offering her a lifeline. Now, it will take every ounce of will power she possesses to resist all that he offers.

Ham was always a traveling man, never one to settle down in one town, with one woman, for more time than absolutely necessary. But Ham's faced his own demons, and he's learned a lot. About himself, and about the life he knows he's meant to live. So when he hears that Zara's having a rough time, he wants to be the one to help. In fact, he wants to do more than that for Zara. A lot more. But first, he must prove to Zara that he's a changed man.

So this was definitely a bit different from the other books in the series so far. We still get a complicated guy and a somewhat sassy girl, but no more real mystery and intrigue, which was a bit of a shame to me. Ham is a wanderer and in the past he and Zare had a good thing going on. They even really dated for a while, but other than that it was more of a hook up whenever he was in town. Being sick and tired of that arrangement, Zara breaks things off with Ham. She feels more for him, but also knows he won't ever change and she deserves real love. I honestly couldn't agree more with her and loved the fact that she made this big decision, instead of waiting for Ham to chance his mind.

Couple of years later and things haven't worked out that well for Zara. She lost her shop, had to leave her house and she has only just recovered from a divorce, when Ham sweeps into town. Apparently after all these years he has come to his senses, and realized that Zara is the only woman for him. I'm inclined to say too litlle too late, but he's a stubborn man not wanting to give up. Convincing Zara of his intentions and feelings won't be that easy, he will have to work for it. Though it's not like the woman has a lot of choice, as Ham has a tendency to give orders and people follow them.

Slowly though Zara's heart warms again and Ham finds a way to sneak in behind her defenses. He's there every step of the way to help her get her life back on track the way she wants to. When things from Zara's past rise up again, she can definitely rely on him to be their by her side.

While I very much enjoyed this story, I didn't feel quite as invested in the story. I liked Zara best from the two main characters. She had a very interesting, hard past, add all the things she's been through in the past year and now Ham showing up again. You know there will be drama. The thing was that I wasn't completely convinced by Ham. I really liked that he was always there for Zara throughout the years. This showed he did really care about her, but the whole part of letting her go because she deserves happiness and then later realizing you were an idiot, just seemed even a bit arrogant to me. He shows back up and he didn't expect that much resistance from Zara (which she is very much entitled to). I can take a guy who likes to take control, but Ham just takes it to another level and that was too much for me.

There's nothing like the first time . . .

In Carnal, Colorado, Faye Goodknight is the town's quiet, shy librarian. She may also be Carnal's last remaining virgin. For years, Faye has had a crush on Chace Keaton, but the gorgeous cop has always been unattainable. She's resigned to live contentedly with only her books for company-until Faye suddenly meets Chace alone in the woods...

Chace doesn't think he's the good guy everyone believes him to be. He's made a lot of choices he regrets, including denying his feelings for Faye. Through his choices, he's come to believe the pretty librarian is too good for him, but after their time in the woods, Chace realizes that she may be his last chance for redemption. Soon, their long simmering desires grow to a burning passion. Yet always casting a shadow over their happiness is Chace's dark past...

While reading Lady Luck I had my doubts about Chace Keaton. I honestly thought he was a dirty cop, though I was also confused about his relationship with his wife Misty, which really wasn't one. Still no one deserved what was being done to her, and it doesn't sit well with Chase. He can not let it go and is still looking for the perp. With his head stuck in a bad place, the last thing he thinks he needs is for sweet innocent Faye to meddle in his business.

Faye has had a crush on Chase for the past thirteen years or so. While she mostly has her nose in a book, it doesn't mean she's unaware of what is going on around her, certainly when Chase is nearby. She never knew what drove him to mary Misty and it kind of broke her heart. Now things have changed and it seems this little librarian is on his radar. Faye sees he's hurting and when circumstances seems to keep throwing them together, the connection between them becomes undeniable.

With all the bad in his life, Faye might just be what Chase needs. Someone good, sweet, honest and tempting. Chase wants to give them a chance, but he's also afraid. With all what has been happening recently, Carnal isn't the safest town anymore. Also not everything is completely out of the woods yet. There are still people who want to control him and the people in town. He has given in to that for a long time, though hated every minute of that. It was all to protect those he cared about, but it was destroying him. No longer can he do that, he still feels so much guilt over that past it's nearly eating him alive. With Faye by his side, he can slowly let that go if only they would let him.

Even though these books all go through the same pattern; with two main characters falling for each other carefully, one of them usually has a bad past, that's not done interfering, some criminal element to up the drama and tension, and in the end a happily ever after which they had to work for very hard and there are definitely tears involved. It's a pattern that I love. I just get swept into the story and I find it wonderful that the stories are long, so I get to enjoy them for a good while. Usually I try to read one book each week for a series, but this is the fourth book I read in one week.

The characters were once again wonderful. Like I said, I had some doubts about Chase, but he was able to convince me in the end. The way he treates Misty wasn't really right, but the circumstances he was pushed into, I believe many would have done and acted the same. Now I'm just so glad he got to let all of his past go and give real happiness a chance. Faye is so recognisable. She's a total book geek and I thinks she's awesome. The fact that she waited for the one was kind of admirable, and some might even say romantic, though I think she mostly took a very big risk. She put all the stakes on one horse and she was very lucky that in the end it played out well. Realistically Faye was on her way to become single cat lady. In book world she got exactly what she wanted all along, her own happily ever after.

Saturday Series: Lady Luck (Colorado Mountain #3) by Kristen Ashley

Is love in the cards?

Since birth, Lexie Berry has had nothing but bad luck. Orphaned at an early age, she had a rough childhood and a boyfriend who was murdered. Now the beautiful, stylish Lexie is determined to change her luck and her life. But first she's got to make good on a promise: to pick up Ty Walker from prison. One look at the gorgeous ex-convict and Lexie knows she's in trouble-and already thinking about taking a walk on the wild side . . .

For five years, Ty was imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. Now he wants revenge on the people who framed him. Yet when the high-stakes poker player sees the leggy Lexie, he suddenly has other desires on his mind. Realizing that Ty is innocent, Lexie tries to stop his plan for vengeance and help him become a better man. But as Ty battles his inner demons, dirty cops and criminals plot to take him out. Can he and Lexie find a way to escape the past?

Well this definitely took a bit of a darker turn. While there was a killer in the previous book and the craziest of exes, the main characters themselves were good people and with a clear past. Now not so much as Lexie's ex was a pimp and she's now on an errand for a drug dealer picking up Ty from prison. He's been in jail for five years, for a murder he didn't commit. Can you smell the drama?

Now don't get me wrong, these two main characters are also clean, they are just more connected to bad stuff. Lexie always tried to pull her ex out of that life, but in the end she wasn't able to. Because of her ex, she's now unfortunately connected to some unfortunate characters that can bring down her life, so she does small innocent tasks to keep them off her back until she can escape. This includes picking up Ty, though she had no idea that the piece of hunkalicious wouldn't let her go that easily.

Ty, being in jail for five years, has had a lot of time to figure out a way to get revenge on the people who've put him there. With a single minded focus this might actually get him into more trouble. Meeting Lexie is a present send from heaven. She fits very nicely in his plans and in his arms. Together they start a journey to his home and to build a life together.

The better they get to know each other, the harder it gets for Lexie to keep her distance. She's afraid his need for revenge will destroy and devises her own plan to help him. Everyone knoww Ty didn't do the crime, so there are a lot of people willing to help him out. Ty hasn't been the only victim, though might have lost the most.

Lexie is awesome, it's as simple as that. She hasn't had the best of luck, still she stays so positive and is a total goof. Also she never really gives on hope that one day she will find her luck, so when things go well between her and Ty she believes in them. Lexie knows and fully realizes things haven't been easy for Ty at all and the injustice done to him, but she's here now and stands by his side no matter what. The girl is loyal, protective, sweet, smart, goofy and has some some serious sass. She couldn't be more perfect for Ty.

Ty is actually a good guy. The only reason he got framed was because he rubbed someone the wrong way and because he's half African America. Now I don't deal well with racism, so I was definitely very caught up in this injustice and therefor my hatred for some characters was very well grounded. It sickens me that in this day and age skin color can still be such a big issue. His search for vengeance isn't healthy, but I do believe he deserves justice. For five years though that has been his only thought, but when Lexie enters his life that focus slowly changes. He never thought life could get much better. When he's not all he-man and speaking in one syllable words, Ty is pretty sweet. He likes to spoil his girl and does those little things that will make you swoon.

So once again plenty of romance and sexy time, with even more mystery and political intrigue. Small town definitely doesn't mean small crimes. I love that combination of romance and suspense. Whenever I think I've figured out what is going to happen next, I really don't have a clue it seems. It's all so well thought out and intricately woven, it's simply brilliant.

She's ready for the ride of her life . . .

Lauren Grahame is looking to reinvent herself. After leaving her cheating husband, Lauren moves to Carnal, Colorado, and gets a job as a waitress in a biker bar called Bubba's. It's a nothing job in a nowhere joint . . . until Tatum Jackson walks in. Lauren has never seen a man with such good looks, muscles, and attitude. But when he insults her, Lauren doesn't want anything to do with him. Too bad for Lauren he's also the bar's part owner and bartender.

When the rough-around-the-edges Tate meets the high-class Lauren, he thinks she won't fit in at Bubba's. Yet there's more to Lauren than meets the eye, and Tate soon sets his mind on claiming her as his own. Before long, the desire burning between them is heating up the cold mountain air. But when violence strikes the town, Tate must reveal a dark secret to Lauren-one that may put an end to their sweet dreams.

Lauren left behind a broken marriage, fake friends and a house that was never a home. She has given up on ever finding her something or someone special. It just isn't for her. When her self-discovering journey lands her in Carnal, Colorado, she knows she has found a place where she can start over. The name alone kind of clues into what kind of town this is. Carnal isn't big and everyone knows everyone. It's also a biker town and that is so far from what Lauren is used to, it just might be what she needs.

With a biker town and a biker bar, comes biker men of course. It's the kind of men Lauren never thought she could be attracted to, but when Tate walks into Bubba's, she is sold. Until he opened his mouth. The man has a bad attitude and a tendency to run his mouth. While Lauren might not be a tough biker chick yet, she does have plenty of sass. Which kind of surprises Tate, still the last thing he needs is more drama in his life.

Seeing that he's the owner of the bar and she now a waitress, they do spend a lot of time together and that sexual tension between them becomes harder and harder to deny. When it explodes though it's wonderful. They might be constantly at each other's throat, though not in a bad way, more like little disagreements that end up in great make up sex.

They definitely keep things interesting, but there is more going on. There is a killer on the loose, going after women and doing very horrible things to them. An overall tension drops on the town. This somehow intensifies everything between Tate and Lauren. Though if a killer is not enough to create some drama, Tate's ex is still there. A woman with some serious issues, that can not let go of him. If she can not have him, she is set out to destroy everything around him.

So drama, drama, drama, I lover it! That combination of romance, mystery and so much drama makes this an amazingly entertaining read. While this whole plot seems over the top, it is technically possible, you just can not believe this would all happen is such a small town. Still it has me hooked so badly, I can not get enough.

Tate and Lauren are both great characters. They are very real and flawed, while still being wonderful. Lauren needs to learn throughout the story, that she is worthy of special and that she can find happiness. Tate almost the same. He's only human and has made some mistakes in the past, his ex being one of the biggest and therefor he fears what he feels for Lauren. Technically Tate knows she's not like the others, but it takes a while to really sink in and just let his feelings flow free.

I effing love these Colorado Mountain men! So glad to get that off my chest. Seriously the way Kristen Ashley writes her characters is freaking awesome. Mostly because they are real. Yes, the men are all handsome, but they are also very flawed and still you fall for them. The woman each have their own appeal and mostly sass, but they are real women with desires and insecurities, while still being strong in their own way. I also love how the characters are a bit older than what I am used to read, as in they passed the 3 mark a while back or in this case even the 4. Reading this reminds me that it's never to late to find happiness and you do get multiple chances in life.
