Review: City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments #6) by Cassandra Clare

In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

A couple of weeks ago I started reading and reviewing this series, in wait for this release. There was a final book coming for Clary, so I had to (re)read the rest of the books. Afterwards I might start reading The Infernal Devices, if I ever find the time. Anyway I was so excited for City Of Heavenly Fire and it did not disappoint.

First I wanted to round in down to four stars, but after careful consideration I rounded it up to five. There were a couple of minor issues, but most of all I think this was an amazing end of this series. I don't want to get too much into plot details, don't want to spoil anything, but their were a lot of twists I did not see coming. Cassandra Clare did a wonderful job with this installment, my emotions were all over the place sometimes. This big battle really brings out the best and worst in some people.

Like in any war, people indeed die and there might have been a couple of tears, but in the end it is a story about hope and never giving up no matter how dark it gets. Once again I am overwhelmed by these characters and the love they have for each other. These people are willing to give up everything for the people standing beside them. They are brave, selfless, strong even when it all becomes too much, they still do not give up.

It has been a pleasure getting to know these characters, watching them grow and become even stronger. Not one is my favourite and I think there are all awesome. They are all so different, but somehow together it all works. To me it's really these characters that drive these books. There was even one point where I could almost believe that Jonathan/Sebastian could be redeemable, knowing what he did, you know Cassandra can pretty much work magic with words.

I really don't know what else to say, there is just so much going on and I could talk about it for days, but I don't want to spoil anything. Just read it and you'll understand. City Of Heavenly Fire was everything it needed to be.

P.S. We get some glimpses of the next series and I'm already in love with these characters. It will probably not be here until 2015, so it's going to be a long wait.

The New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon.

What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

I was happy Clary chose to bring back Jace from the dead, though it might not have been the wisest decision as it left him open to evil forces. City Of Lost Souls starts right off after City Of Fallen Angels, where Lilith brought back Sebastian from the dead and not only that, she also bound him and Jace together. Which means if you hurt one of them, you also hurt the other. Since the Clave wants Sebastian dead, things are not looking great for Jace.

Now the Clave doesn't know they are bound, since Clary and her friends haven't told them. They are hoping they can get to Jace before they do and save him. Which isn't as easy as one might think. Nobody is able to locate them, even Magnus can't track him. So Clary contacts the Queen of the Seelie Court to help her out. That is just asking for trouble. Still Clary goes after Jace and Sebastian, hoping she can stop them from whatever evil plan they have going on or at least get to warn the others of what they have planned.

Meanwhile back home, the band of merry men and women, are trying to find a way to split Jace from Sebastian. These people really like to put themselves in dangerous situations. Only one little problem, it seems there is earthly weapon or device, that can do what they want.

In between that, there is plenty of personal drama for everyone. Alec is still hellbent on finding a way to be with Magnus forever, one way or another. Things between Simon and Isabelle are finally looking up, but then Simon's hold on having a normal life seems to be really slipping away this time.

There was again a lot more action, while still keeping a grip on the personal drama without it being too heavy. It is amazing to see how far these people are willing to go to save the ones they love. They are really being pushed in that department. Very well written and plenty of plot development to kind of see where this is going and to still keep us guessing. Another war is coming and it will be worse than ever before.

I might have done a little happy dance when I found out there were going to be more The Mortal Instruments books. Let's be honest, who wouldn't want more of those badass Shadowhunters, awesome warlocks and Simon.

All ended pretty well in the last book. Valentine is out of the picture which means peace has restored, mostly. Clary can finally be happy with Jace and she is even training to become a real Shadowhunter. Unfortunately not everything stays that way. It seems ever since Jace got resurrected, he's been having some nightmares about killing Clare. Afraid he might hurt her physically in real life, he starts pulling away from her and therefor ends up hurting her anyway, emotionally that is. So no rainbow and sunshine for these two it seems.

We got to see a lot more of Simon in this one, which was very interesting. To me he's still that nice guy, the best friend, who could never really hurt anyone, but is willing to go through fire for his friends. The bantering between him and Jace adding that necessary humor to the stories. Well life is definitely no longer the same for him. He never chose to be a vampire and tries holding on to his normal life so desperately. Still at one moment he will have to embrace it. Simon will never grow old and outlive all his friends. Quite depressing if you think about it. Adding the fact that he is a Daylighter only complicates his life even further. It seems again, but even more that before, people are out to kill him. With the mark of Cain on his forehead though, that is not going to happen so easily.

Of course there is trouble brewing, otherwise it would become very boring. Someone is killing Shadowhunters, more particular former Circle members. Besides that Clary somehow stumbles upon a cult who are trying to make more Sebastien's. All very dark stuff and that combined with Jace's dark thoughts, everything is bound to go to hell.

City Of Fallen Angels builds very nicely upon the choices made in City Of Glass and its aftereffects. What seemed like a good choice then, might have some dire consequences now. I really liked seeing more from Simon, his role is definitely growing. The focus is no longer mainly on Clary and Jace, we get to know everyone better. Magnus has always been fascinating and now we get to see the fear Alec lives with of him one day dying and Magnus keep on living. That confrontation with mortality is a big theme in this one and it makes you think.

This time it was also way more character focused than on the overall plot. It was nice getting deeper into the skin of the characters. There was still action, though way less than in the previous it seemed.

City Of Fallen Angels is a great beginning of a new trilogy. Valentine may be dead, but there are more enemies out there out to get them. The story is definitely becoming darker and I like it.

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters - never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the third installment of the New York Timesbestselling series The Mortal Instruments.

So now Valentine has the cup and the sword, all he needs is the mirror to complete the ritual. This means he is going to Idris. Meanwhile Clary finally knows how to save her mother, except Jace is against her going to the city. As in he will try anything to stop her. When by a freak accident Simon ends up in Idris and Clary sneaks in, things really go wonky.

There were a lot more scenes from Simon's POV. Since he's been turned into a vampire, more specifically into a Daywalker, his world has changed even more. People are now after him too, while all he wants is to try and live a normal life.

Clary is on a mission to save her mother and nothing will get in her way. The lack of support from Jace is surprising and she finds a surprising ally in Sebastian. He's a family friend of the Lightwood's.Nothing is at it seems though. Jace is keeping his distance to protect Clary and Sebastian has a few secrets of his own.

Then there is the overall threat of Valentine. At first the Clave is reluctant in believing he would dare to attack the city. They are too confident in their 'supperior' defense system. When it will take Shadowhunters and Downworlders working together to stop Valentine.

This time you really have to pay attention, because there were a lot of hints to what was to come and it is possible to figure it all out. Also the multiple crossing storylines were interesting. The main focus was on Valentine though. He is the biggest threat to them all. There is of course still that drama between Jace and Clary, having you wonder where this is going exactly.

Another great book, though the last fifty pages were the best, where everything came together and it all started to make sense. As usual a lot of action, plenty of drama and other typical teenage behaviour whil trying to save the world as they know it. A good end for the first trilogy.

Saturday Series: City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments #2) by Cassandra Clare

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

Finding out the love of your life is actually your brother, talk about awkward. While this bit of information is trying to sink in, Clary tries turn her life back to normal, as much as that is possible. Somehow this involves dating Simon. Yeah, I'm not seeing it either.

Now her mom is still in a coma and they really have no clue, traditional or paranormal, how to fix this. When the inquisitor shows up at the institute, it seems this is the least of her problems. To say the inquisitor is pissed, is putting it mildly. She believes Jace was in it all along and that he's Valentine's spy inside the Institute and the Clave.

She is not alone in this, a lot of people believe Jace at least knew something. Jace feels betrayed by his family, the Lightwoods and doesn't really know where he belongs anymore. Meanwhile someone is killing Downworlders, making it look like vampire murders. They try to investigate, but the focus of the inquisitor seems more an Jace. And when Valnetine steals the Soul-Sword, Clary and her friends are once again on a mission to find Valentine.

I really liked the action and the overall fast pace. Though there is a great balance between that action and the more quiet, emotional parts in the book. Clary struggles with her feelings for Jace and Simon. It's hard for her to imagine how something that feels so good, is considered bad. Meanwhile Jace is also struggling with those feelings and he also has trouble matching Valentine with the man who raised him. That feeling of not belonging and mostly not knowing who he really is, keeps resurfacing.

Jace and Clary try to keep a certain distance between them, but it really is torturing. Cassandra Clare is really putting them through the wringer. For now I'm just going with it, but I really hope things will change for them.

What I really liked about this one, was the struggles Jace was dealing with. There were once again a couple of moments where we got to see things from his POV and it was pretty heartbreaking.

Cassandra follows through with her books. This was a great sequel, with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. Her books are addictive!!!
