This series started of so strong, I absolutely loved the first one, but somewhere things went south for me. I always thought the whole Kindrily concept was fascinating and the possibilities endless, unfortunately to me things kind of stayed bland. 

Maryah is finally able to focus her powers more and uses them to find out what Dedrick is planning. Those plans are of course very diabolic and it will take everything for Maryah and her kindrily to stop him. The way everything is intertwined and the reasons why Maryah erased are very well thought out. Miss Hooper is able to tie up everything very nicely, leaving me with no further questions.

The focus this time is definitely back on Maryah and this new character Rena. At first I was not sure what to make of her. She added some confusion, to keep you guessing all the way through the end. Rena is now one of my favourite characters in the series and I hope she and Dakota get their own story.

Once in a while we get to see things from Nathaniel's perspective, but they did not add that much more insight to me. I still think he is a great guy and his love for Maryah amazes me, though him and the rest of the kindrily kind of fall onto the background. They were so active in the previous novels and I missed them a bit in this final installment.

Overall Fighting For Infinity was a good story, but it could have been more. I am glad the way things happened and how all the mystery and intrigue gets resolved.

I absolutely loved Grasping At Eternity by Karen Amanda Hooper (click here for the review) so I definitely couldn't wait for Taking Back Forever. The review isn't actually part of the book blitz, but since I received it through NetGalley and already finished, I decided to include it. Taking Back Forever came out last week and as part of this book blitz I can share an excerpt and you can participate in 2 giveaways (one is open US/CAN, other INTL).

Review:
Taking Back Forever starts of right where Grasping At Eternity ended, so no quick overview of what happened previously, you just get thrown right in. If it has been a while since you've read the first book, you might want to read the last couple of chapters again before starting book two.

The story this time is mostly told from Maryah and Harmony's point of view. It certainly was very interesting to get inside the head of Harmony as she is so different to Maryah. Harmony is still on a mission to find and save her soulmate Gregory. Now that Maryah is in the know how, Harmony is hoping Maryah powers will return soon, but it seems it's taking longer than expected. Since Harmony has been without Gregory for almost twenty years, she's kind of running out of patience and tries to take things into her own hand.

Meanwhile Maryah really does want to help Harmony, but it's discouraging the little progress she is making, which is practically none. Not even Carson's new invention is helping her all that much. That's not the only thing Maryah is frustrated about. Things between her and Nathaniel are great, but still she's pretty much constantly reminded of reasons why she shouldn't have erased. So Maryah's feelings throughout the story are all about frustration and disappointment in herself.

Honestly Taking Back Forever feels like an in-between story to me, a transition between the first and the third (which I haven't yet read). There are a lot of things happening, but more on a personal growth level than with heavy action. You get to know all the members and the structure of the kindrily better, there is of course romance and even tragedy... Still you keep having the feeling there is so much more. The world of kindrily is endless and the way the book ends it could go all ways. The book doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but there is a sneak peek at the third book and that will definitely make you wish you could start reading the rest at that moment.

   

Excerpt:

“Shiloh, you know he has the ability to see clearly in the dark, and that he sees light and color differently than the rest of us.”

I nodded.

“Well, he swears he can still see your star in the sky.”

“You said my star fell. That it was gone.”

“I know. And I can’t see it. As much as I’ve tried and hoped to see a flicker of light where your star used to shine, I still see nothing. But Shiloh doesn’t lie. And he swears he can see something.”

I lifted my face and scanned the cloudless sky above us. “What does that mean?”

“It means you erased, but you aren’t gone. We know that’s true because you have remembered glimpses of our past. It gives me hope that you’ll remember more. I wanted to tell you what Shiloh sees so you could share that hope. Your star didn’t fall from the sky like I originally believed. Erasing caused it to burn out, but I believe you can reignite it.”

I looked at the sky again. I wanted to see the stars. I wanted to see my star. I wanted to burn so brightly that other galaxies could see me. But wanting and doing were very different things. Doing, I thought. It was up to me to do something. No one could make my star shine except me. Nathan did give me hope. According to Shiloh, I still had a place in the heavens. I was determined to turn on the light so that everyone could see I was home again.

Book Review: Grasping at Eternity (Kindrily #1) by Karen Amanda Hooper

Review:

You know how you decide to read a couple of chapters before you go to bed and the next thing you know it's 3 AM as you turn the last page. Yeah, so that's what has happened here , I don't think I have any better way to say how good this book was.

"How ironic if I returned to my birthplace only to die of heartbreak."

The story starts of very strong and nearly had me crying within the first ten pages. After tragedy strikes Maryah's family, she has to move to Sedona, Arizona with her guardian and her family, whom she has never met before. Her newly adoptive family isn't your average family and Maryah notices some weird things happening around the house, but doesn't really know what to think of it. Still lost in her grieve, she tries to ignore it and slowly moves on with her life.

After the attack she also started to have these dreams about this really handsome guy, whom she thinks is her angel of death. That is at least until she meets Nathaniel, who is that guy from her dreams. Maryah thinks she is on the break of losing it and decides to keep her "dreams" of Nathaniel to herself, afraid she's becoming mentally unstable.

"She had let go of our eternity, and I couldn't stop grasping onto the memory of who she used to be."

The first time Nathaniel looks back into Maryah's eyes, he knows she's not the same person anymore. His heart is broken over and over again, but his never ending love for her keeps him coming back. He's mad at her for erasing her memory and losing them in the progress, but he can't help to keep hoping she might come back to him, that she can remember their love for each other.

Unfortunately he doesn't have the best way in showing this. After nearly (accidentally) killing her, Maryah is convinced Nathaniel is a lunatic. Still she feels some kind of connection to him and slowly things might change.

I like the theme of reincarnation and having the choice to start fresh or to keep all your memories. Combine this with a possible soulmate and I'm game. But the way Nathaniel and Maryah sometimes act, just makes me want to bang their heads together. Maryah is kind of being difficult and contradictory when it comes to Nathaniel, her dreams and all the other weird things happening around her adoptive family. Instead of facing the truth and talking about it, she simply ignores it and hopes it goes away. This makes life for her more difficult than it should be.

"If anyone can recover from erasure, it's her."

Nathaniel is just being idiotic, instead of believing in his love for Maryah and giving her a chance, he's very much in denial. He's gloomy, depressive and always thinking the worst. He doesn't even Maryah will ever be the same, so he rather stays out of the way, instead of staying close and taking what love he can get. Luckily some things change during the course of the story.

There is definitely plenty of drama to keep it interesting. Like I said you will be reading this in one stretch. I can't wait for the sequel, because one question still remains, 'Why did Meryah erase?'.
