Review & Giveaway: Better when He's Bold (Welcome to the Point #2) by Jay Crownover

Some men are just better when they're bold.
Welcome to the Point...

In a dark and broken kingdom, a ruler has to be fearless to control the streets and the ruthless people who run them.
Race Hartman is just bold enough, just smart enough, and just lost enough to wear the crown. Places like the Point will always have bad things and bad people, but the man in control of all that badness can minimize the devastation. Race has a plan, but can he prevent total annihilation without destroying himself?

Brysen Carter has always seen her best friend's brother for what he is--too pretty, too smooth, and way too dangerous to touch. Basking in Race's golden glow is very tempting, but Brysen knows she'd eventually get burned.

When she starts receiving threatening texts and someone tries to take her out in parking lot, the only person interested in keeping her safe is the one man she can't allow herself to have.

Sometimes being bold is the only way to stay alive. But can she let Race save her life . . . if it means losing herself to him?

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

While Bax was bad, Race screams trouble. He's pretty much a walking, talking contradiction. Grew up in the Hills until one night he met Bax, attracted by the excitement of the Point he kind of went off track, then he found out about his sister and things just completely exploded. Now somehow he's become the crime lord of the Point, though he does it mostly to keep trouble away. Meaning he's not a bad guy, with bad intentions like so many others out there, but he does this to keep those bad guys off the throne, so they wouldn't make things worse. Though lets be honest, the money isn't hurting either.

Now with that kind of job comes certain dangers, so I was actually surprised when the threat came from somewhere completely else. Brysen likes to think of herself to be a regular college girl. It's just that her father is a workaholic, and her mother an alcoholic. Meaning that she is responsible for the house and her little sister. So life for her isn't as easy as she would have liked these past couple of years. While she admits being attracted to Race, she isn't a complete idiot, she knows he would only bring more trouble in her life.

Still circumstances pushes them together and Brycen is done ignoring him and hating everything he stands for. Now there is someone after her and Race might be the only one who can keep her safe, though there are plenty of twists to keep you guessing.

Better When He's Bold was a little bit more tame than Better When He's Bad. Bax and Race are completely different and it was wrong of me to expect the same kind of story. With Race it's easier to belief there is good inside him. He also has a little bit more optimism in him, and that gives us a little ray of sunshine. His business of course demands him to do bad things, but somehow it feels more justified.

Brycen was a surprise to me. I had no idea what she was dealing with at home and this new threat came out of left field. Though I have to admit that about halfway through I realised what was going on and who was behind it. So plotwise more predictable, but still plenty of twists and turns in between to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Great novel, with amazing characters and there is so much potential for more stories. I already look forward to reading Titus' story next!

Review: Better when He's Bad (Welcome to the Point #1) by Jay Crownover

Welcome to the Point

There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

We are used to Jay Crownover to write about bad boys. While in Marked Men those guys have attitude problems, tattoos and are players, in their core they're not really bad. They're even pretty good. This isn't the case with Bax.

The guy is a criminal and has no ambition to improve his life whatsoever. He was just released from a five year stint in jail and his first thought is revenge. Going to jail has left him with some unfinished business that needs tending to. This mostly includes finding his best friend Race and getting rid of his former boss Novak.

While looking for race, he finds Dovie. She's apparently Race's sister. Not quite someone you would expect to find in The Point. While her upbringing was also harsh, she somehow made it out untouched. With that I mean, she has a good heart, is a nice person and still believes in making the world a better place. Bax didn't make it out unscattered, and is someone 97% of the people he meets are scared off for a reason.

It seems everyone is looking for Race though and Dovie wants to help Bax find her brother. She considers Race a bit of a hero for getting her out of a bad situation and well he's family. Things are dangerous in The Point and it seems safer to keep Dovie close to him. Race would never forgive Bax if something happened to his sister.

Though Bax never promised to keep his hands off her. It would be wise for them not to cross the line, but Bax is a bad guy, used to taking what he wants. Things don't just heat up between him and Dovie, it's an inferno. Those intimate scenes were smoking, panty dropping hot.

I liked Bax, though not that I would ever want him to be my boyfriend or anything like that. While I don't believe that he's to the core bad, I do realize he makes bad decisions and does bad things, fully knowing they're not good and not caring about the consequences. He does show a little bit of a softer side towards Dovie, but that only amplifies his attitude towards the rest. If he likes you, you are good. If he doesn't, you better run.

You have people growing up in place like The Point, wanting to do anything to leave that behind and go somewhere better. Then you have people like Bax who just seems fated to stay in The Point forever and live the criminal life to the fullest. What you need to realize is that he will never be a good guy, he just has good moments.

Dovie like I said has a certain innocence about her. Her life hasn't been easy and she knows how to take care of herself. Still she also wants to help people, user her bad experience and turn it into something good. I also liked how she wasn't out to save Bax. She accepts him the way he is, as long as he is willing to do the same and mostly daring to come to her.

All in all I loved this book. Jay Crownover has quickly become one of my must read authors. I really like how in her writing and her stories, she doesn't sugarcoat things. It's all very direct and honest, which often doesn't make it ideal, but it makes it real. To me that is awesome, that realness and with this book even raw. Add those amazing characters with strong personalities and I am hooked.

Review: Rowdy (Marked Men #5) by Jay Crownover

After the only girl he ever loved told him that he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and set out to live up to his nickname. A good ol’ boy looking for good times and good friends, Rowdy refuses to take anything too seriously, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Burned by love once, he isn’t going to let himself trust a woman again. But that’s before his new co-worker arrives, a ghost from the past who’s suddenly making him question every lesson he ever learned.

Salem Cruz grew up in house with too many rules and too little fun—a world of unhappiness she couldn’t wait to forget. But one nice thing from childhood has stayed with her; the memory of the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been head over heels in love with her little sister.

Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this one. The way Nash ended I was definitely intruiged about Salem and what that connection was between her and Rowdy. From all the guys, he seemed to be the one with the least issues, except unable to commit to one woman. He's technically a nice guy and a great friend, so I wasn't expecting too much drama. All in all it really wasn't that much now, but his or their past gave us some serious tension.

One of the more interesting parts was, to me, the fact that Salem was older than Rowdy. At their current age, this isn't an issue, but it did have effect on how everything developed in the past. When Salem turned eighteen, she hightailed out of town the next day never looking back and leaving behind one lost boy who saw the people in his life always going. When they were young Salem and Rowdy had this connection. She was his biggest supporter, so when she left Rowdy started holding on to the one secure thing, her sister Poppy.

I don't want to get into too much detail, because that would spoil everything, but while indeed the sister is the biggest issue for Salem I completely misjudged the situation. I was surprised how less serious this was. Salem misunderstood the entire situation and that causes some serious friction between her and Rowdy. Meanwhile he's afraid now that Salem is back, that she might leave him again. So we have these two main characters rekindling that past connection while discovering this also more carnal attraction. Things go relatively smoothly once they stop being stubborn, though when Poppy shows up, so does the insecurities and doubt.

While I abslutely loved Rowdy and Salem, this isn't my favourite book in the series. Mostly the blown out of proportion situation with Poppy and Rowdy, was what held me back from saying this was a fantastic read. The whole twist at the ending though, definitely added some extra action I could enjoy. I still love the whole dynamic in this group of friends and will continue reading the next books. So this was a fun and sexy book, with some minimal heavy drama. Fans of the series will enjoy it, but if this is the first book you want to read by Jay Crownover, I recommend you start with Rule though.

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Marked Men series continues with this sizzling, sexy story of love, heartbreak, fate, and second chances.

Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.

WHEN I PUT THE key he had given me in the door to his apartment it felt like the end of a long journey. Really it was only a little over twelve hours and I had stopped to nap once along the way, but it still felt like too long since I had seen his face or been able to touch all that toned and tattooed skin. Jimbo greeted me at the door when I pushed it open. His tongue lolled out of his mouth and he jumped up and put his paws on my legs. He was going to be huge when he finally grew into his fuzzy body and I was overwhelmed at how happy I was to see him. I dropped to my knees and rubbed my face in his neck as he licked me all over my face. I was obviously missed and I had to say it was just one more reason I knew I was finally where I was supposed to be. It was late, so the apartment was dark.

I checked the dog’s food and water, trying to be quiet in case Rowdy was already asleep. I was winding my way toward his bedroom when a haphazardly discarded sketch pad lying on the couch caught my eye in the dim light. I paused for a minute to pick it up and felt my heart stop and then start to race as I flipped through the first few pages. There were a couple of drawings that were obviously for clients, tattoos that hadn’t made it from paper to skin yet, but most of the pristine white pages were covered with images wearing my face. There was mermaid me, and naughty- sailor- girl me. There was sassy Indian girl me with long Pocahontas braids and there was sexy devil me standing next to angelic me. There were dozens of them all in different shapes and sizes, but every single image was undoubtedly modeled after my distinct look. I wasn’t sure if he had drawn them all over this last week while I had been gone or over the months we had been chasing each other in circles.

Either way it made my heart swell and the full certainty that I was it for him settle deep inside my bones. I set the pad down and tiptoed through the hall. Jimbo took one look at where I was going and huffed out a disgusted- sounding snort. The poor guy had learned early on that he wanted no part of what happened between his humans when they were together in the bedroom. The light was off and Rowdy was sprawled on his stomach across the covers. His blond hair was sticking up every- where and he hand one arm bent up under his head. The only thing that could have made the sight better would have been if he hadn’t bothered with the black boxers before crashing out.

Even with them obscuring the view, I couldn’t complain. I let out a breathless sigh and crept closer so that I could lean over and touch my lips to that anchor on the side of his neck. I felt his pulse leap and tasted the salt on his skin as he murmured sleepily and rolled over onto his back. Those infinitely blue eyes glowed at me in the dark as a grin pulled up the corner of his mouth.

“Hey.”
