Review: Breaking through to Sue (The Breaking Series #4) by Nicole Sturgill

This is the fourth in the Breaking series. Ryder Hampton is wild and crazy. He takes nothing seriously, including love, and is convinced that he falls in and out of it nightly with nearly every woman he meets. He winds up in trouble in Bakerstown and that's when he sees Susie Atkinson.

Suddenly, he knows he's in love and this time it's for real. But how can he convince the woman of that when she laughs at everything he says, convinced that he's joking with her. How frustrating for a man who is used to flashing his dimples and getting whatever he wants!! Add to that the complication that Brody Atkinson is her brother, the town Sheriff and he hates his guts. And of course there is another man sniffing around her skirts and Ryder knows he has a serious problem and Susie Atkinson is the cause of it all!

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

This is my favourite book in the series and it's pretty much all because of Ryder. He's just such a fun and crazy character. I have this thing for hyperactive hotties, they often instantly make the story a lot lighter. While these days we would say he has ADHD, back then they just called him a troublemaker.

Ryder has a problem with sitting still and his brain is wired a bit differently. Not a lot of people know how to deal with that and well he has a tendency of ending up into trouble. Getting into fights, telling all the women that he meets that he loves them, drinking too much and stuff like that, made him end up a night in jail in Bakerstown.

When Ryder meets Susie though something strange happens. His brain goes quiet and all he can see is her. Susie is his angel and Ryder knows he's fallen in love for real this time. Unfortunately Susie doesn't see it the same way. She believes Ryder, with his looks, are out of her league and the things he says to her are lies.

Honestly Ryder has no idea how to deal with that. He has always spoken the truth and sees no use of lying, now he has to find a way for Susie to give him a real chance. Though he has to hurry up, because there might be people on the sidelines waiting for him to screw up.

Susie is quite the different character than her sister, Sally. She's more softspoken and nice, often too nice. Also physically there are different. Susie is smaller and has a bit more meat on her bones, therefor her self confidence isn't that great. For a guy like Ryder to show any interest in her, seems almost absurd. At least in her eyes, everyone else can see how smitten he is.

I really loved how Ryder made Susie open up, helped her relax and made her see that she is pretty amazing. There is less big drama in this story, but seeing that growth in Susie and all the interactions involving Ryder made it a very entertaining read. These are two likeable characters and so easy to connect with. Ryder definitely added a lot of humor to the story and I really appreciated his honesty. All in all very refreshing.

I am a mother of three and wife to an incredible man who makes creating strong and loving male characters in my stories easy. When I’m not chasing my children, spending time with my husband, or taking care of one of my eight animals (including a tortoise, a bearded dragon and a ball python), I am writing. Living in a small Kentucky town, which requires a twenty-five minute drive to simply find a traffic light, creates the need to find escapes and writing does that for me. At times when I’m not writing, I also enjoy four wheeling, hiking, hunting, and spending lots of time outdoors. Life is a constant inspiration and so, I try to live it to the fullest!

#WattpadWednesday: Breaking Down Defenses (The Breaking Series #3) by Nicole Sturgill

Wattpad Wednesday is a new weekly meme, where I review books that originated on Wattpad. So it can be published now and removed from Wattpad or currently still on this site. There is some crazy talent on that website and through this I want to help spread the word :)

By now you must know how much I love this Breaking Series by Nicole Sturgill. With each book they just get better and better.

This is the third in the Breaking Series. Thomas Cooper has lived a hard life since leaving the ranch four years ago. The kind of life that changes a man. Circumstances bring him back to the ranch and to the only family he has ever known and the only woman he has ever loved. Too bad life has long since turned him cold and hardened his heart.

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Thomas left the ranch because of Sally. She was only a teenager, too young for him back then, but she made it clear how she felt about him. Not being able to deal with it, Thomas left and joined the Rangers. For the past couple of years he's been leading a pretty dangerous life and the man who returns now is no longer the boy who left.

It's actually by chance that Thomas is returning. He's been gone so long he fears the reaction his return will get, even if it's just temporarily. While most are actually happy to see him, Sally is a bit mixed. She's happy to see him, but kind of hates that he left in the first place.

They are both older now and more grown up. It's clear that things between them aren't yet resolved. Sally has never forgotten Thomas and secretly has been awaiting his return. Now she just has to convince him to stay.

There is a lot of firework between these two. Sally is stubborn and always speaks before thinking thinking. She definitely adds a lot of drama to the story. Thomas has changed while being gone. He's a lot harder and has demons inside that eat at him. It would be safer for them not to be together, but being who they are, it just might work. The journey definitely isn't an easy one and they will both need to make some changes if they want this to happen.

I really like the change in Thomas actually, because it makes him a more complex character. The same with Sally, her words often gets her into trouble and it's interesting to see how she deals with the consequences. Which are mostly not good.

So we have all the love stuff between Sally and Thomas, but meanwhile there is something else going on with his Ranger job that adds depth to the story. It certainly adds to the drama. What I really love about these stories is that it's not just a love story, there is always something more going on. This adds action, mystery and drama, I love it.

#WattpadWednesday: Breaking Jacob (The Breaking Series #2) by Nicole Sturgill

The Breaking series by Nicole Sturgill is definitely one of my favourites from Wattpad. I've been following her stories for a while now and if you're into historical westerns (think lots and lots of hot cowboys and outlaws), you'll like her work.

This is the second story in the Breaking Series. Jacob Atkinson is lonely and longs for a woman he can call his own. Then along comes Alice and she is just what he's been waiting for. The only problem is her names isn't really Alice and she is a con artist who is used to making men fall in love with her and taking everything they had. Will she be able to keep her secret under Brody's watchful eyes and will Jacob's love and the love of his family finally be enough for her to change her ways and reach out to them for help?

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Honestly I had totally forgotten about this story until Jacob was introduced in Breaking The Rules and even then I only remembered that he had his own story. While Brody was out doing his thing, Jacob stayed home and took care of their sisters. Jacob actually raised them and it wasn't easy. It was very hard work to make ends meet and making sure there was food on the table. With his focus constantly on his sisters, he didn't have much time for anything else.

Now that they've all moved, there is a lot less to worry about and Jacob starts realizing he's feeling lonely. He's even a bit jealous of his brother, because Brody was able to find himself a woman to love and Jacob wants that as well. Living in a small town does kind of limit his options, but when Elizabeth hires a nanny, things start looking a lot brighter.

Alice has a bad feeling about this latest job. She's good at what she does, but robbing a sheriff is something different and very risky. What she definitely didn't plan on was falling for one of her marks. Jacob is everything she has ever dreamed of wanting in a man, but when he finds out she's been lying about her identity things might not go over so well.

Everything between the two main characters moves kind of fast, but I'm thinking that back in the day you didn't waste much time as you never know what was going to happen, so I'll let that slide. Jacob is not my favourite character in the series. He sees things his way and never leaves any room for another opinion. So he's extremely stubborn and once you screw up, forgiveness isn't much of an option.

Alice is a result of her upbringing, though I won't go into that as it is much more fun to discover that yourself. There are not a lot of options for a young woman to make money and stealing from the rich is a bit Robin Hood like. Doing this for so long though has taken a toll on her and she wants out, but of course it's not that easy. I did like her character. She's not a bad person, never really harms and she deserves the life she really wants.

Overall a fun story, with plenty of drama and certainly some action. I really like this family and it's nice to see some of the other characters return. There were some new characters we got to know as well and they'll be getting their own story.

#WattpadWednesday: The McEllis Boys by Nicole Sturgill

I wanted to introduce something new called Wattpad Wednesday. Basically this means once a week I will read and review a book that originated on Wattpad. So it can be published now and removed from Wattpad or currently still on this site. There is some crazy talent on that website and through this I want to help spread the word :)

We're starting off with The McEllis Boys by Nicole Sturgill. She's now a published author through Dream Big Publishing, but there are still some of her stories up on Wattpad. So you can always check those out first and decide if she's the author for you!

Kentucky 1875 - Cavanaugh, Jamison, Ian, and Andrew are four brothers torn apart by life and by tragedy then drawn back together because of the same. Granting a wish to their dying mother, Mary, a healer, sends the brothers on a journey. A journey to heal, to grow, to forgive, and to love. A journey that will take the gun toting, horseback riding, tough-as-nails brothers to a place very different from the home they know.

Kentucky 2011 - Nicole lives a lonely, simple life. A life void of excitement. She'd been burned enough times in her life to know that tragedy was normal and everyone eventually hurt you. Her quiet life is ripped to pieces the day she discovers four cowboys in her empty house claiming to be from 1875. Can she help the brothers learn what they were sent to learn and find a way back home? Or are they truly there to teach her a lesson in trust and love? Read this story about healing, love, hope, pain, loss, friendship, and family, to find out!

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

This is definitely one of Nicole Sturgill's more fun books. We actually get four stories in one about all the McEllis brothers. The whole setup is a bit silly, just don't think too hard about it and enjoy the ride. Even though Cav, Jamison, Ian and Andrew are brothers, they each have very distinctive personalities, so it's easy to keep them apart.

It has been years since these men have been in the same room. The fact that Jamison is an U.S. Marshall and Ian an outlaw, may clue you in how well these family dynamics are. Though it was interesting to see how these four guys are now forced together and have to live together again. There is certainly a strain on the relationships. So on the one hand we have these four brothers slowly resolving their issues.

Then there are also the individual issues and that is why they are sent to the future. They are placed their within Nicole's house for a reason and as long as they don't resolve their problems, they are not going back. Now cowboys from the 1800's weren't big on talking and dealing with emotions, so it's not easy at all for them. A little clue, it involves women and opening up. No easy feat for these tough cowboys.

We get to know each guy and girl in this book pretty well. They all have a very clear storyline towards their possible happy ending. It does get a bit cheesy and predictable at times, but the characters were so likeable I didn't mind.

Because we have four stories, the book is a bit long, but it's written very fluently so it didn't feel that lengthy. There was a lot of humor in the story, which I liked, though no laughing out loud funny. For me there were certain chapters that could have been scrapped, because they didn't directly involved the brothers and felt unnecessary to me. Overall a great book and if you would like to know what is to have your own real cowboy, then this is the book for you.

Review: He Followed Me Home by Nicole Sturgill

Francine has always had a gift. She has always been able to sense ghosts and she loved the paranormal. However, when she went civil war ghost hunting she never expected for one to follow her home. She expected even less to have said ghost turn out to be the man she'd always dreamed of. She hadn't expected him to fall in love with her or to fall in love with him. But that is exactly what happened. But, surely this is crazy and nothing could make this relationship work... could it?

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Whenever I'm reviewing something of Nicole Sturgill, just know I've first read it on Wattpad. Nicole has come a long way since the first stories she posted there, still one thing remains the same, she writes very fluently and that drags me in. Seriously you start reading this and before you know it two hours or more have past, without you realizing it.

He Followed Me Home is a fine book with an original concept. Wyatt is a hundred-something-year-old ghost. He died during the Civil War and is still there where he died. Being invisible, never being able to talk to someone, to touch someone, it gets kind of lonely. Meeting Francine is the last thing he expected. She can see and hear him. His first human contact since he died. Wanting to keep that connection, he decides to follow her home.

Francine has always been in touch with the occult. Normally though that doesn't mean talking and actually seeing ghosts. When Wyatt follows her home, she's not happy about it. Slowly they get to know each other better and honestly he's everything a girl could wish for, except he's dead. Just one tiny obstacle to overcome.

Since there seems to be some connection between Wyatt and Francine, they decide to explore things further. Things become even weirder and paranormal factor grows. Even if she could be with a ghost, that is not the life you want or at least that is not what Wyatt wants for her.

I really liked the general concept and plot, very fun. Though a couple of times things do get a bit too much, with too much twists that just drags the story a bit. Wyatt is a great character. With him being from the 1800's, makes him totally different from men nowadays. He's very polite, protective, loyal, says what's on his mind. It's a pleasure to read about him.

Francine was an okay character to me. In the beginning there is this whole deal with a boyfriend I don't understand. She seems so strong and independent, then this guy turns her into someone she's absolutely not. Other than that there is not much to say about her, though she does have a pretty cool job.

Read this book if you're looking for a light, fun paranormal story.

I've heard said that being an author is the only socially accepted form of schizophrenia and that's probably right! I'm a happily married stay at home mom of three whose passion is writing! Historical fictions featuring deadly gunslingers and tough cowgirls are my favorite but I'll write whatever happens to come to mind. Thanks for winding up on my page and I hope you enjoy anything you happen to read!

Review: Breaking the Rules (The Breaking Series, #1) by Nicole Sturgill

This is the first story in the 'Breaking' Series. Elizabeth has always been more at home breaking steers and branding cattle than in the house cooking and cleaning but her father is pushing her to settle down and get married to the man of his choosing.

But what happens when she falls in love with a man who is completely off limits? Brody Atkinson isn't looking for love and he certainly isn't looking for any more life and death struggles but that's exactly what he finds when he meets Elizabeth McCready and the two of them uncover a plot to steal her ranch.

I first read this story when Nicole was uploading it, a chapter each day on Wattpad. It wasn't the the first story I read by her and it certainly wouldn't be the last. With my blog taking up so much time this last year, I haven't had much chance to read a lot on Wattpad, but her stories I follow with each upload. I am very proud of her on getting published.

By now she has about fifty completed works on that site and the Breaking Series is definitely one of my favourites. Breaking The Rules though is not the best of the series, in my opinion. I have had the chance to read the others and with each book it gets better and better.

Do not get me wrong Breaking The Rules is still very good. There are not a lot of historical romance novels that can catch my interest. Often they are filled with clichés and do not feel authentic. This is not the case here. Sometimes it is little things like using western slang and old phrases to give it a more realistic touch, that sets it apart from other historical novels.

Elizabeth isn't your typical woman from the 1800's. Instead of always wearing dresses and worrying about finding a suitable match, she likes to wear trousers, work on the farm and marriage is the last thing on her mind. Unfortunately she will need to get married if she wants to keep that farm. Her dad has gotten very sick and his last wish is to see her happy and taken care of. Elizabeth is convinced she doesn't need a man to help her run the farm, she's practically been doing that on her own for the last couple of years.

Unfortunately her dad is very stubborn about it. If she doesn't marry, the farm will go to someone else. Elizabeth is also not allowed to choose just anybody to marry, her dad has already picked out Grant for her. A classy business man from Virginia, with ambitions in politics. Anything but a match made in heaven these two.

Seeing no other option, Elizabeth agrees. Before that can actually happen though, she is kidnapped along with the new ranch hand Brody. It seems someone does not want to see her get married or rather they want that farm.

Being stuck with Brody turns out pretty good really. Elizabeth is always talking about needing no man, but when two are about to kill her, she is glad when Brody comes to the rescue. Now all they need to do is get back to the farm. With no food, water or horse, it will be a long walk and plenty of time for these two to get to know each other very well.

From the moment Brody arrived on the farm, the tension between him and the boss lady have been intense and that only grows on their travel. Before you know it sparks are flying all around. Though a happy ending is not that easy for these two. Just when you think this is it, you realise there is another hundred pages, so things are about to go down.

Definitely a story with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you flipping the pages. The romance between Brody and Elizabeth went a little fast for my liking, but these two are so perfect for each other. They are both so stubborn and independent, constantly bickering and making up. There is this funny side to Brody that I did not expect and it is just charming. The overall ending is pretty predictable, but plenty happens in between to keep it very interesting. I think Nicole Sturgill did a wonderful job with this one.

I can not wait for the rest of the series to come out so I can reread them!
